Paul King Photo Pages

Besides being a HUGE Buddy fan and co-founder of the Winter Dance Party Musical Scholarships,
Paul King of England has traveled to the many Buddy related places
and has been kind enough to share his photos & commentary of his trips with us.

This is looking south down 5th Avenue. The building with the canopy nearest left edge is 33 5th Avenue where Maria's Aunt Provi lived. Wonder is she's still around? Just a couple of apartment blocks down on same side id the Brevoort (immediately above the yellow cab in this picture). I'll bet not many people realized just how close The Apartment was to Aunt Provi's apartment. On far right of the photo is Washington Arch monument on Washington Square. When you look down 5th Avenue from the Empire State Building you can clearly see Washington Square and The Brevoort about a couple of miles away. I can remember from a previous visit in Feb 1998 that you could look north from The World Trade Center tower and also see The Brevoort and Washington Square, probably a mile or so away.

This is the canopied entrance to 33 5th Avenue.
Note that the lady in the doorway is NOT Aunt Provi, it is your good friend Dot King!

The Brevoort appears to be 'H' shaped. There is an entrance from 5th Avenue with apartments on each side. Buddy and Maria's apartment (4H) is on right hand side of the entrance, it is the 4th up from pavement level. (British fans note that in USA 1st floor is the Ground Floor) with corner balcony. I understand that each apartment although only 2 bedrooms is very spacious with large rooms. Sale prices are certainly $1 million plus. Uptown at The Dakota (John Lennon's apartment building) prices reach $10 million!

The main entrance to The Brevoort. The Concierge there (Carlos) is very friendly and informative, but will not give any personal information. Not only Buddy but many other famous people have lived there, some at present. I understand that The Brevoort was constructed in about 1957 or 1958, so Buddy and Maria were there soon after it was built. It's been reported that they paid around £1,000 per month rental (approx. $1800 US dollars today). An astronomical amount then, but it was...and still is...prime real estate. Carlos tells me that he often gets visitors asking about Buddy these days, back in 1997 on my first visit when Carlos was there then, visitors weren't so frequent.

Inside the Lobby, something real interesting. The Brevoort was built on the site of Mark Twain's house! It's true, here's a picture of the Twain house. Had believed this already, because I saw a map with Twain's house shown on that position, but on a previous visit the picture wasn't in the Lobby.

A close-up of the corner, Apartment 4H is on the 4th Floor (3rd Floor to Brits!). Hang out of the balcony,
look to your left and there's Washington Square and the Arch. Young lady below is, again, your good friend Dot.
