Prism Recording Studios

In mid 1958, Buddy decided that he would build a recording studio of his own in Lubbock, TX. It would also be home for his parents, as well as Buddy & Maria. When Buddy died, the studio idea was scrapped & the land sold. It would have been operating shortly after the Winter Dance Party Tour. The mailing labels were printed, record cutting tools were ordered, land was purchased & the above design was finished.
Rick Horgan of Texas owns the original plans and fills us in on the details:
"I own the original contract for the property & structure that Buddy was planning on
having built, which according to the document, was a tract in the Bobelett estates. The
contract was entered into on August 11th, 1958 and the document was filed and notarized
in Lubbock County on August 12, 1958. The document states the amount Buddy paid for
the property & structure was $55,000, the document is signed Charles Hardin Holly & LO
Holley. I believe the structure was to contain 4 bedrooms & 3 baths. I also had the impression that this structure was going to be primarily the home of his parents with the studio as an addition".
Since Buddy was married on August 15th, four days later, it is apparent that Buddy’s
intent was to acquire this property and structure before getting married - protecting it
from community property.
Buddy had asked Ray Rush of The Roses to be promotions manager, Norman Petty to be responsible for sales, George Atwood as studio musician as well as A&R duties. Another sideline was to be a "Maria Music" publishing company. It is evident from all of this that Buddy would have most likely been one of today's foremost recording producers, and.....probably much more than we can imagine.
